Preston Hollow

Preston Hollow in Dallas is an affluent neighborhood with a population of approximately 8,000. It's located just north of downtown Dallas and has some of the city's most desirable real estate.

History

The area now known as Preston Hollow in Dallas was originally called Old Preston Road and was a part of the Peters Colony. The Peters Colony was one of the first colonization projects established in Texas, granted by the Republic of Texas to impresarios in 1841, who brought settlers to the region. Much of what is now Preston Hollow was farmland until after World War II, when it began to be developed for residential homes.

In 1948, developer Bill Blakley bought up large tracts of farmland from local farmers and began building new homes. He named his development "Preston Hollow," believing the lofty trees there reminded him of England's picturesque Sherwood Forest. Today, many of those same majestic trees still stand tall and vibrant throughout the neighborhood.

Living in Preston Hollow

Preston Hollow is home to many of Dallas' wealthiest and most influential families, including former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura Bush. The area's affluent homes range from traditional ranches to contemporary mansions ranging in price from millions to tens of millions of dollars. Private schools like St Mark's School of Texas, Jesuit College Preparatory School, Ursuline Academy, Hockaday School, and Episcopal School of Dallas are within the neighborhood boundaries.

White Rock Lake

White Rock Lake is a 1,254-acre lake with kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, fishing, and swimming. The lake is surrounded by trails for biking, jogging, and walking that offer picturesque views of the natural surroundings. There's also an amphitheater located on the lake's shoreline providing entertainment all year round.

Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden

The 66-acre Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden is situated on White Rock Lake in Preston Hollow. This massive public garden offers over two dozen specialty gardens featuring beautiful blooms full of color throughout the year. Visitors can participate in educational activities related to horticulture or delight in the garden's outdoor concerts and festivals.

Preston Hollow Village

Preston Hollow Village is an upscale shopping mall that features a variety of stores, restaurants, and entertainment venues. The shopping center is home to a movie theater and popular eateries like Del Frisco's Grill, Mi Cocina, Ozona Grill & Bar, as well as many other retail shops.

Dallas Country Club

The Dallas Country Club is located in the heart of Preston Hollow, offering its members golfing, tennis, swimming, dining, and more. This exclusive club was founded in 1896 and has been a popular spot among locals ever since. It's also home to a few of the city's most important social events, including galas, fundraisers, and weddings.

Meadows Museum of Art

The Meadows Museum of Art, located on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Preston Hollow, features an impressive collection of Spanish art from the 10th to 19th centuries. The museum is renowned for its collection of works by artists like El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, and Picasso. It also displays some contemporary pieces from noted Latin American and Spanish artists.

Preston Hollow Park
